The Red Herring Today is

(Sunday, 9/14/2008)  We were just notified that the third race of the RCR series has been abandoned, so we took 2nd for the series.  That's a RED FLAG.  We love red flags.  Thanks to all who sailed in the series!

(Wednesday, 9/10/2008)  The winds were E 15-20 in the bay -- a little more than we expected, but we weren't sorry. We got a pretty good start, even though News port-tacked to the pin and there was just enough room for him flop over to starboard and cross the line ahead of us. As soon as we crossed we flipped to port in order to clear our air. Because it's been breezy this year we've learned quite a bit about upwind trim and driving in stiff breezes, so we did very well upwind. When we came together with the rest of the fleet the first time Coyaba had to duck us. That was a satisfyingly rare occurrence. We rounded the windward mark close enough to save our time on Outlaw and Coyaba.

After rounding we deployed the chute. The breeze was stiff enough that we were able to sail pretty deeply. Our boatspeed for most of the leg was in the high 6's, with some reasonable stretches over 7 in the puffs. We had a couple good gybes, rounded the leeward mark and did a windward takedown. It was even puffier on the final upwind leg, but we sailed well.

We finished tied for 3rd with Outlaw and we locked in a 3rd for the series. Woo Hoo! Our first flag this season. Thanks to our A+ crew of: Judy, Steve, Ben, Kim and Dave.
